Change of Pace (Sort Of)

I feel like I haven't been living up to my blog name. I've focused quite a bit of the Girly part of Diary of Girly Nerd, not so much the Nerd part. I've decided it's time to change that. I'm going to start doing more posts on Nerddom things I like (or Geekery if you prefer), library things (as I want to be a librarian), and feminism. Plus any other issues or topics I feel like rambling about. The fashion posts are here to stay of course, they will just be in-between the wordier posts.

A few upcoming posts:

  • An Open Letter to Jezebel
  • My Girl Crush on Zooey Deschanel
  • How to Style Your Nerdy Tees
  • In Defense of "Commodity" Library Books

Thank y'all for sticking with me,
Caitlin (Or Caity or Cait or whatever)

P.S On the library stuff, I've been trying to get #librarygems trending on twitter for months now. So if your local libraries have any cool things, please tweet them!

Summer Carnival!

Last weekend I went to a carnival that's held every year at a local private elementary school. It's a small carnival but still pretty fun. Mostly because I had my great group of friends with me!

Here's me and my bestie/hubby, Shilan, taking a very silly iphone picture. Well all of these are taken with my phone because I have misplaced my camera somewhere in my boyfriend's room.

And here's my lovely boyfriend in the spinny part of the funhouse we went through.

And here is me falling down on the same spinny thing. It was hard to stay upright!

Of course being a good goth, I had both a sunhat and a parasol. I refuse to get sunburned this summer. I'm pretty happy with this outfit for the Summer of Goth. It's a bit Lolita inspired but obviously not full out frills and what-not.

I finally got to wear my new putomayo skirt, also a find at fanime.

My boyfriend wanted to take a close-up of my face and I got shy.

Okay time for the outfit rundown:
Hat: Walmart, Necklace: Forever21, Cami: Macy's, Shrug: White House Black Market, Skirt: Putomayo, Shoes: Payless.

Slightly Late Con Report: Fanime Part 1

On memorial day weekend I went to Fanime! This year was my second year going and it was awesome. I even went to Day 0 this year! Which is when you stand in line for hours to get your badges. My friend, Shilan, was getting mine, but my boyfriend's little sisters had to get theirs so I went along with them for the experience.

Yes people did dress up just to wait in line. For those who don't know this is Stephanie Brown (my favorite batgirl) and Jason Todd when he's Red Hood.

Here's when I finally got my badge around 8 pm. Shilan had been in line since 8 that morning.

Me and my boyfriend's packing pile on Friday morning. Even though Fanime is only down in San Jose, it's easier to stay in a hotel for all three nights. Less driving, and also it means we can stay in the gaming hall until really late.

This is what my boyfriend wore to the first day. He's Haruhi Suzimiya from the anime and manga of the same name. Yes I do think it's awesome that I have a boyfriend who's that comfortable in his masculinity.

This is what I wore! My second gothic lolita outfit. The dress is my first big lolita purchase. It's from Fanplusfriend and I swear I'll get a review up soon.

Outfit Rundown:
Dress: Fanplusfriend, Sweater: Baby the Stars Shine Bright (bought second hand at the swap meet on Thursday night), Shoes: Thrifted, Bow: Claire's

There were tons of Jack Frosts from Rise of the Guardians this year! This one was one of my favorites.

Another one of my favorite cosplays! The Cabbage seller from Avatar the Last Airbender!

I bought a Batcube. He is the night!

It's Seltie from Durarara, one of my favorite animes. It's a bit obscure so I was surprised to find both this lady and another cosplaying as Seltie. Also that helmet is not easy to make!

Here's me as a gothic Poison Ivy with another girl as Poison Ivy.

My boyfriend (on the left) and another guy, both as Scarecrow. We went to the DC/Marvel meet-up which wasn't at all well planned. There was about 30 minutes wasted in moving us and trying to set up. But our friend Mae got a few good pictures in!

On Sunday night there was the black and white ball, and the only picture I got was of my hair, with some leftover ivy leaves pinned in it. Hopefully my friend with all the pictures will upload them soon. That's all I got for you. I really didn't take many pictures. I'm gonna have a post later will all the stuff I got.

Red & Black Week Day 6: I have no clever title for this one

I don't have much of a post for the grand finale, but I finally had a chance to wear this skirt so I had to show it off.

I bought it from the lovely Shannon of http://drinkingnotstudying.blogspot.com/. She's a great blogger and was a lovely person to buy things from.

It's such a fun skirt and I've been twirling in it all day! Anyways happy end of Red & Black week.

Outfit rundown:
Cami: Macy's, Shrug: Hand-me-down, Skirt: From Shannon, Shoes: Thrifted, Bow: Wonder Woman bow from the lovely Siren (http://www.etsy.com/shop/Sirenlovesyou)

Here's a quick close-up of the bow. She makes a ton of them every year for Fanime and she has some of those that were leftover up on her etsy. You should also check out her tumblr for awesome geeky lolita designs: http://ladylawga.tumblr.com/.

Red & Black Week Day 4: I'm Going to College! (Again)

Yep I'm going to Canada College. Which is in California, not Canada. I'm going to be in their costume design program. I went today to look at their housing advertisement board. Everyone there was really nice and the campus is really pretty.

I was nervous about going to community college, thanks to my high- school making them sound awful. But Canada seemed more like a small private college

They even have a student government which I want to get involved in. I wanted to in high school, but my grades were awful.

Everything feels like I'm getting a big second chance now. After two years at SFSU that ended badly and a much needed year off, I feel really confident about going back to school. Also because it's Red and Black week here's a sort of close-up of my outfit.

Outfit Rundown:
Cami: White House Black Market, Sweater: Forever21, Skirt: Thrifted, Shoes: Payless (the kid's section.)

Red and Black Week Day 2 & 3: Sorry I'm a Lazy Blogger

I only got one picture of the outfit I wore on Monday because it was a busy day. I dressed up a bit because it was my boyfriend's twin sisters' 16th birthday. It was also my dad's, my youngest sister's, my grandma's and my cousin's. But the twins were the only ones physically close enough for me to be there to really celebrate. It was a dinner at home, but it was still nice to put on a dress. I'll use any excuse to dress up a bit.

Outfit Rundown:
Dress: Thrifted, Cardigan: White House Black Market, Necklace: Heirloom, Belt: White House Black Market, Shoes: Thrifted, Earrings: Claire's or Forever 21 I can't remember.

Today I stayed home with my bf because he was sick and needed taking care of. He felt much better around the afternoon. So I was able to throw a quick outfit together for the red, black and white subtheme.

He took all the pictures, and like the idea of a silly jumping one. It was very bright out though, so sunglasses had to stay one the whole time. I didn't want to get a mini-headache. Plus they look cute!

I'm really glad I had an opportunity to wear these converse. Their my second favorite out of my collection. (My favorite are the custom Batgirl ones my boyfriend painted for me, of course.) I had nearly forgotten about them until this week. I should wear them more often!

Outfit Rundown:
Cami: White House Black Market, Cardigan: White House Black Market, Jeans: Thrifted, Shoes: Journeys, Necklace: Rue21 (I don't think this store exists anymore...), Bracelet: Clothing swap. Sunglasses: Thrifted.

Health Update and Some Thrifted Finds

So I had a second ER trip on Friday. Turns out I was right and the not being able to breath right was the biggest problem. This time around they actually checked that out and gave me some albuterol. I have an inhaler now to help when the chest tightness flares up. Hopefully it's just a temporary allergy issue and not asthma.

Anyways to cheer me up, my lovely lovely boyfriend took me to a couple different thrift stores over the weekend and I found a lot of goodies! So enough rambling about my broken body and onto the pictures of goodies!

Yes that is Ghoulia's scooter for $9.99. If you know anything about Monster High you would know that's a great deal. I was super excited.

Here's a better picture of it. It had been opened and was missing the backpack, but for $9.99 I don't really mind.

Because just owning the Monster High dolls isn't enough, I got this dress so I could look like one too. It very much reminds me of something Rochelle would wear. Yes I am taking fashion inspiration from kids toys. I think it could look super cute with tall boots.

Two different antique fashion plates in what I think is their original antique frames. There was tons of them lying around the Goodwill by my moms' house. These were my favorite though. I'm probably going to paint the frames black before I hang them up.

Not an actual steel-boned corset, just plastic. It looks super pretty though, and for me that's all that really matters. It was clearly made for someone a little busty-ier than me, so I'll probably be wearing over shirts most of the time.

Cute cat-eye sunglasses that were super cheap. Instead of the $20 I see them for online usually.

I also got a couple black skirts but I couldn't get decent pictures of them. Nothing like some retail therapy to cheer a sick girl up.

The Professor's Monthly Homework Assignment: Spring.

Yeah I'm a little late, but I have a really good excuse. Last night I was in the ER. I even got a pretty picture taken by my roommate to prove it.

I'm fine mostly. Apparently I had just gotten very very run-down from working too much and too hard. Retail work and auto-immune diseases don't really mix well. Also I may be coming down with a stomach virus. Nothing major though, so that's good. On to my spring inspired outfit I wore to work yesterday!

It was raining, hence the rainboots. I guess we got our April Showers a little early here in SF. Although instead of May flowers we're just getting more cold, wet, windy weather. On the plus side rain boots look adorable with dresses. Maybe not the "gawthy!" of footwear, but I think they lend a certain retro cuteness.

Plus they do make me think of spring, especially with the polka dots. For whatever reason polka dots make me think of spring. Which is why I'm wearing pretty much three things with them in this outfit. On my boots, on my tights, and sort of on my cardigan. The big hair flower was the extra icing on the spring cake that is my outfit.

Bonus picture of my all sorts of ridiculous face that my roomie/photographer managed to snap.

Outfit rundown:
Cardigan: White House Black Market
Dress: Thrifted
Belt: White House Black Market
Tights: White House Black Market
Boots: Sears
Hair Flower: Claire's
Necklace: White House Black Market

That's all folks! So long for now,
Caity
